You’re about to start seeing a new Psychologist, or you’ve just begun. How do you get the best results from therapy?
One of the realities of counselling and psychotherapy is that there is usually a financial investment.
This can be a barrier for some people, especially if you’re worried about whether your financial investment will pay off.
One of my top tips to help you make the most of therapy is:
Do your homework.
My clients who have the most success from therapy take what they’ve learned in our sessions and apply it to the rest of their lives.
Rather than leave the advice in the clinic after their 50 minutes is up, they make an effort to integrate the changes, tools and techniques we’ve discussed into their day, week and year.
That’s how you achieve real change.
Often, your therapist will assign “homework” – things for you to think about, take action on or observe outside of therapy. Make the effort. Write notes if you need to. Maximise the impact of your efforts and investment by following your therapist’s advice at home.
